Decoys New York and New Jersey

Clovis LeFebvre Whistler Hen
EBW2 Clovis was the founder of the Alexandria Bay, Thousand Islands,
school of carving, followed by Chauncey Wheeler, Frank Coombs and many
others. He was the first to introduce the eye groove and was arguably
the best carver from that school active 1890-1910. Rare and wonderful,
all original 13.5" Golden eye hen. There is a tight crack in the bill
which was hunter fixed with a brass screw through the bottom of the
bill. See pg 182 of Thousand Islands book for like bird. Some one has
incorrectly painted Chauncey Wheeler on the bottom.

New Jersey Scaup,Eugene Birdsall
EBW13 New Jersey,Unidentified Carver
Outstanding and very early New Jersey Scaup old working decoy by Eugene Birdsall, circa 1880-1890, see page 65-67 of Fleckenstein's New Jersey Decoys. Done in the classic center cut hollow style. Seam is tight on the side as well as a tight age crack down the back. Ballast lead plate on the bottom is fastened with brass tacks. Eyes are carved and painted and the thin body paint is worn to the wood in places. Great Patina, the head shape (frontal view) is a positive unique Birdsall trait. Eugene's brother Jesse Birdsall carved some Scaup decoys with Eugene around 1890 using the same pattern, so this could be a joint Birdsall effort!

Frankie Louis Humpback
EBW25 Frankie Louis (1875-1964), Ogdensburg, NY near Alexandria Bay is
believed to have created this folky decoy (looks mostly like a blue
bill hen but has red canvasback eyes) between 1903 when he started
carving and 1910 when he bought a band saw and sander and went into
"factory production" . The body is exactly the same as his later
"factory" birds, but the "beetle" head is something special. See page
166, 167 of DECOYS OF THE THOUSAND ISLANDS for a spread on the
"Ogdensburg humpbacks" . He only made one size and shape of body for
all species of ducks so that is why this decoy may have been intended
as a canvasback even though it is only 13" long. Great folk art in
O.P.

New Book: The Decoys of Long Island
ETS1 A great new book of Long Island New York Decoys that were exhibited at the Ward Museum. The book was sponsored by and all proceeds will be going to the Long Island Decoy Collectors Association, a group of which I am a proud member. This is a very good cross section of decoys from many carvers through the history of Long Island and has many wonderful full color photo's of each known carver. I recently was able to identify two John Dilley Dowitchers in Fall Plumage thanks to this book and resold them for a considerable amount of money! Buy this book, it will make you smarter or at least appear that way! Price below includes shipping cost.
